The idea of using interlocking panels for a garage door was originally conceived in the USA around seventy five years ago. Called sectional garage doors as they are made up of separate panel sections interlocked together which open vertically without swinging outwards. Insulated sectional garage doors have many advantages over other types of garage doors, they are very secure and offer superior insulating properties depending upon which material they have been manufactured from. Sectional doors feature a deep rubber seal at the bottom which effectively seals the door when closed and also aids insulation when the door is closed.

From a security point of view the panels are interlocked together, with extremely strong side rollers which are locked in position with sliding lock mechanisms, the choice of material also affects the security of the sectional door. If an insulated sectional garage door is specified they would normally be constructed from foam filled insulated sections, cedar wood is another very popular material for sectional door manufacture along with steel and GRP which can be specified with many finishes including wood effect. They can be manually operated or specified with an automation kit for operation via a remote control, which has many advantages.

Sizes are dependent on manufacturer, Hormann sectional garage doors for instance are available in sizes up to seventeen feet wide and seven feet high off the shelf, with larger sizes available as a special order garage door from the factory. Carteck offer a slightly larger door off the shelf while Gliderol are usually slightly smaller along with the Wessex range.
