Author: If there’s one common theme that we can see in many of the 850+ customers we’ve worked with over the past two years, it’s this: dog owners don’t appreciate just how fast-acting and aggressive the Parvo virus is.
You can go to bed one night, with a perfectly healthy-looking, happy dog, and wake up in the morning to a very sick one - and, yes, the smell of Parvo is unmistakable, as the diarrhea, which can often be one of the first symptoms to appear with the latest 2c strain of this virus, is absolutely disgusting and unlike anything else you may have encountered before.
As an example, one of our customers, in the Pacific Northwest, noticed that their dog was sick with Parvo on a Sunday morning, and later that very same day, in the late afternoon, it had already died.
Even when this virus doesn’t claim your dog’s life quite so quickly, too many people sit around for day after day, watching their dog suffer, and doing nothing about it, because they reckon they have time.
But they don’t!
You know what dogs are like - most of them, if not all, absolutely love their food, so if your dog stopped eating, for as little as one day, wouldn’t you be concerned that something could be seriously wrong?
All of our dogs are, thank goodness, healthy (although we do live in the worst state for Parvo), but even on those rare occasions when one of them does throw up, they are eager to eat again just a few minutes later, so a dog that’s off his food for even a few hours (which is in many cases the first sign you’ll see that your dog has Parvo, provided you’re observant, of course) should be a massive, red warning sign.
The sad thing is, there is such a lot of misinformation about Parvo that many dog owners are lulled into a false sense of security.
These dog owners feel secure because:
- Their dog is vaccinated and up-to-date on all of its shots. And now for the reality: Parvo vaccinations are not effective against the 2c strain (which is why we are seeing more and more customers with fully-vaccinated adult dogs still getting Parvo and, if they’re not treated, dying), and your dog may even develop full-blown Parvo symptoms (particularly if your dog was vaccinated after he’s been infected, which is just about the worst thing you can ever do).
- Their dog is no longer a puppy, and only puppies get Parvo. Sorry, wrong again! It is true that Parvo still infects puppies more than adults, but we have also observed, after dealing with over 850 cases of Parvo, that an increasing number of adult dogs are getting this virus too. We’re sort of tired of saying this, but it bears repeating until people get it: vaccinations don’t work like they used to - the latest 2c strain of Parvo is just too strong and the vaccine manufacturers really haven’t caught up with it yet (and that’s besides the long-term issues with all vaccinations, which most vets won’t tell you about).
- They take their dog to the vet’s to have it tested, and the test comes back negative, so they do nothing. Time for another reality check: the 2c strain of Parvo is well-known for generating a false-negative result, and this particularly applies to the stool sample-based tests that most vets conduct in their clinics nowadays. This means that although you are told your dog does not have Parvo, he actually does, and that leads to more days of inaction while your dog is getting sicker and sicker.
- Their dog never goes outside, so it can’t get Parvo. This is another myth, as one of the most common reasons why indoor dogs get Parvo is because it is their owners (or breeders) who give it to them! Yes, people walk this virus into their house without realizing it (or take it in on their clothes or hands). This is why we always suggest that people (including visitors) change their shoes whenever they go indoors.
So, given that there is a ton of bad advice and uninformed hearsay to be found, mainly on the Internet, of course, where can you go to get up-to-date and accurate information that you can use, safe in the knowledge that it will help your dog, and not make matters worse?
Because another problem we see all the time is that people have never even heard of Parvo - until their dog gets it, of course - and, somewhat amazingly, we even come across people who breed dogs commercially who don’t know what Parvo is. For people in the doggie business, this is basic knowledge that you simply should have!

Although this book contains a lot of useful information, you would be far better reading it once your dog is successfully treated.

IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement)
An IVA is useful for people with more serious debts. If you do not think you can pay your debts in full within a realistic timeframe, then an IVA may be able to help.
An IVA is a legally-binding debt solution that enables you to avoid bankruptcy by agreeing to pay off a set percentage of your debts. At the end of your IVA (usually after five years), the remaining debt will be written off.
Before you can enter into an IVA, you will work with an Insolvency Practitioner to draw up your proposal, which will then be sent to your creditors. This must be approved by creditors accounting for at least 75% of your debt for the IVA to go ahead.
Once your IVA starts, you will make regular monthly payments to your Insolvency Practitioner, who will divide the money amongst your creditors accordingly.
If you receive any increase in income while your IVA is in place (e.g. salary rise, bonuses or commission), you will usually be required to give up most of this money to put towards your IVA.
Also, if you are a homeowner, you may be expected to release some of the equity in your home in the 54th month (half way through the final year) of your IVA.
Before deciding on an IVA, consider the implications - while it can help many people with serious debt problems, it will have a significant impact on your credit rating that could prevent you from obtaining credit in the medium to longer-term.

The 2009 Volvo C30 is a four-seat, two-door hatchback that is offered in two trim levels. The base T5 includes 17-inch alloy wheels, coil springs, a 50/50-split rear seat, full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls and an eight-speaker CD audio system with an auxiliary audio jack. The T5 R-Design trim level adds 18-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, specific exterior accents, cruise control, a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system, satellite radio, aluminum dash inlays and a watch-dial-inspired instrument panel. Many, but not all of these features are available as options for the base T5.
Options for either trim level are seemingly endless, and adding one or more of these choices includes a one-time $300 customization charge. Notable options include bi-xenon headlights, headlight washers, a hard-drive-based navigation system with real-time traffic, Bluetooth, a blind-spot warning system, power-retractable side mirrors, a sunroof, park distance control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, power front seats, struts, heated seats and keyless ignition. Unlike other Volvos, there is a large selection of custom exterior colors, interior trim choices and wheel designs.
The view from the front seats is nearly identical to the S40 sedan’s, except for stylish two-tone color schemes and different trim. The sleek “waterfall” center stack provides elegantly simple ergonomics with a floating appearance that is just downright cool. Finding an optimal driving position is easy for any body type, thanks to the C30’s super-comfortable seats and telescoping steering wheel, though the lack of seat bolstering will become apparent when the C30 is driven hard on a curvy road. Rather than attempt to shoehorn a fifth passenger into the C30, Volvo instead chose two rear bucket seats. Rear seating is comfortable with plenty of adult-sized headroom, even though legroom may be a bit cramped for taller folks. Rearward visibility is excellent thanks to the tall and wide all-glass hatch. The cargo area can accommodate 13 cubic feet with the 50/50-split rear seatbacks up and 20 cubes when both are lowered.

If you choose to take your dog to obedience training school, ask for recommendations. Don’t go to the first obedience school you see in the yellow pages. Converse to other dog owners or possibly even to your dog’s veterinarian.
5. Charges
Look at the fees and other services being presented by an behavior training school before signing up. Behavior schools include different fees and the services they offer have a tendency to vary.
